Failboat x Gex: Deluxe is a complete overhaul of the visuals, story, and mechanics of the original Failboat x Gex series of visual novels.

The story itself is more based on chapter one of failgex but still includes  elements from the second and canceled third chapter of the series. It is also over 4x longer than the original story of chapter 1 and features branching choices which can affect what certain characters respond to you with.

The soundtrack includes 18 original tracks and can be streamed from Spotify or Apple Music.

First time? Great!

Don't let the “Deluxe” or lack of any numbers scare you, Failboat x Gex: Deluxe is the definitive version of the failgex story, playing through the old visual novels is not necessary for this entry!

(plus the writing isn’t very good in hindsight so maybe just avoid those lol).

New user interface and daily news segments are present, featuring a few guest artists.

Game engine has switched from RenPy to TyrannoBuilder

Other than everything already mentioned, the writing and story of Deluxe is completely new and stuffed with all new story elements, interaction/conflicts, and new characters. Speaking of characters…

All new sprites for newcomer characters and remastered sprites for a handful of returning characters. Let’s dive further into each character and what you can expect:

Characters

• Failboat:

Failboat is the protagonist of the game (who would’ve guessed). Having moved from his childhood home, big city Vermont has always been a challenge for Dan. Working for a local diner, dealing with his lazy brother, and crushing over his scaly coworker are all parts of his daily routine. Wait… what was that last part?

• Wincar:

The aforementioned lazy brother. Unemployed and avoiding rent, Wincar lives with his brother in a cramped apartment. Wincar is usually found at the Cafe, sleeping on the couch, playing Fortnite, or succumbing to the corruption of the  interdimensional mecha overlord of the media dimension, anything goes with this guy!

• Gex:

It's tail time! This slick gecko has a one liner for almost every occasion. I wonder how a secret TV spy ended up working in a Denny’s… Regardless, his charming attitude and good looks won over the heart of our protagonist, will he share the same feelings for him? This is more intense then *insert movie reference here*.

• Eyea:

Eyea is the owner of the aforementioned diner, a pristine Denny’s. Eyea is the boss of Failboat, Gex, and the mostly unacknowledged cook in the back (I think her name is “Schnozzo” or something like that). Eyea usually gets her way when it comes to things, gaslight, gatekeep, girlboss!

• Failwhale:

Failwhale is the father of Failboat and Wincar. Alive and well in this universe, Failwhale spends much of his time at home keeping the place tidy, while his wife is off at work. He also enjoys watching Sunday Night Football and Worst Cooks in America, what a fella!

• Erica:

Erica works at the local Cafe Wincar frequently visits. Erica and Failboat were childhood friends, even going to the same college together! They both studied broadcasting under Professor Hank, but now they both work minimum wage, so much for that… She used to have anger issues, but she got over them as she grew older. If you ever got past a level 4 friendship with this girl, you should’ve considered yourself lucky…

• Alfred:

Alfred is Gex’s personal butler and frequent enjoyer of breakfast foods. Alfred lives with Gex and keeps his home clean and organized. Hold on… If Gex can afford to maintain a butler in his home, why is he working at a Denny’s? So many mysteries with this gecko…

• Agent Xtra:

Agent Xtra is Gex’s ex lover, who he shared an intimate affair with during his time at the TV Terrorist Defense Unit. Salty over his new choice of career, Xtra comes to mock Gex. Did you know Gex even saved her from the grasps of the evil Rez in the media dimension? Its true! Don't ask him what they did afterward though…

• Cuz:

Cuz is the cousin of Gex, if you couldn’t tell by his very creative naming scheme (good one Crystal Dynamics). This laid back gecko watches almost as much TV as Gex the Gecko himself, he’s a bit chubby but that won’t stop him from dining at the world famous Denny’s. 

• Carina:

Captain Carina is a bit of a hot topic around the Vermont area, famous for her luxury cruise ship that sets sail every summer. Despite her riches, she enjoys supporting small business. She also kinda looks like Failboat, if he was a girl, and was a squid-octopus-person-thingy. Must be a coincidence…

• Jex:

Ugh… Who invited this guy? This is Jex, a tourist from Paris visiting the Americas. Why Vermont? I don’t know, I just work here! This French fellow undeniably resembles Gex, if he had a baguette for a tail and a very strong French accent. This intruder claims to be from the: “Failboat x Gex Chapter 1 French Translation”. Sounds dumb…

“HEY! Aren’t you forgetting someone PAL?”

• Danana:

OW! Watch where you swing that thing… This is Danana, Failboat’s evil ex girlfriend (woah, who knew he could pull). Equipped with a whip, this girl is out for revenge, for the one who broke her heart all those years ago.

Thank you to everyone for your patience for the release of this visual novel. While initially expected for a late 2023 release, an early 2024 drop made the most sense with the pace we were working at, as well as allowing us to dedicate more time to make this fan game as good as it can possibly be! I hope if you find yourself here and download the game, you enjoy your time with it. This is by far my (bagel speaking here) biggest project ever, and probably will be the peak during my time in the Failboat community. This wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing people apart of the team and the work they put into making this leagues better than the original duology. I would’ve never gotten the honor of meeting these talented individuals if it weren’t for the support from all of you. So thank you, and enjoy the ride!
